The OCU returns to choose as the best diaper one of the cheapest with a very doubtful analysis [Update]

When parents go to the supermarket to buy diapers for their baby and do not know which to buy they tend to choose according to the price (the best will be the most expensive, the worst the cheapest) and based on how much they know a brand. Come on, if you are looking for the best you usually end up with the Dodot in the shopping cart and if you are looking to spend a little less, then some Dodot of another category.

To try to help parents in this regard, the OCU published a few years ago a comparison of diapers that turned out to be quite surprising because the best were not the most expensive, nor were those of the brand we all know. Now a few years have passed, the diapers have evolved and the OCU has re-analyzed the baby diapers with an equally surprising result: the best are the cheapest.

How did the analyzes

There are 13 diapers used in the tests and for the analysis they took those of size 4, which are the ones that are used more and for longer, being those that are between 8 and 15 kg. According to what they say, they used synthetic urine that made each diaper arrive in several jets, simulating the use of the diaper during the day or in a longer jet, simulating the use of the diaper at night. From there they saw how such was the absorption, assessed the leaks and also analyzed the components of each unit, in case there were toxic in them.

Test result: the first five

To punctuate the diapers they looked, as I say, the absorption by the day, the absorption at night, the possible leaks, the sensation of dryness (if when touching the outside part of the diaper it feels wet or dry), the presence of toxic ( some had toxic components, but always in a lower concentration than allowed) and the opinion of the parents, since 30 families were able to try them all and give their opinion about it. The scores were "very good", "good", "acceptable", "bad" and "very bad" for each point analyzed.

The Winning diapers were the Mercadona Deliplus, with a total score of 82, with a good absorption by day, very good at night, a very good leak control, a very good dry feeling, good family opinion, a very good concentration of toxic diapers (very good because there are very few or no toxic, of course) and a price of € 0.16 per diaper.

In the second position the well-known ones were placed Dodot Activity, with a total score of 78, with an acceptable absorption by day, good at night, an acceptable leak control, a very good feeling of dryness, very good opinion of families, a good concentration of toxic diapers and a price of € 0.35 per diaper.

In third position were the Moltex Premium, with a total score of 78, with a very good absorption by day, good at night, a very good leak control, acceptable dry feeling, good family opinion, a very good concentration of toxic diapers and a price € 0.23 per diaper.

The fourth position went to the Bambo Nature, which are ecological diapers. They had a total score of 73, with a good absorption by day, very good at night, a very good leak control, a good dry feeling, a good family opinion, a very good concentration of toxic diapers and a price of € 0.50 per diaper.

In fifth position were the Dodot Diapers (the normal ones of the blue container), with a total score of 72, with a very good absorption by day, good at night, an acceptable leak control, acceptable dry feeling, opinion of the families very good, an acceptable concentration of toxic in diapers and a price of € 0.26 per diaper.

And where are the Toujours? Is it a reliable analysis?

In the analysis of diapers that we commented on in 2012, the winning diapers were the Toujours of Lidl. They were a discovery for many parents like us, that we passed to them and we were very happy with the result. I have personally used them since then and I still use them today because my 3-year-old son Guim is still wearing a diaper at night.

Seeing that there was a new comparison and seeing that the winning diapers were the Deliplus del Mercadona I wanted to see in what position the Lidl's were this time and the surprise was capital to not see them in the comparison. How can a new diaper analysis be done and not include those who defeated on the previous occasion? Because this gives thinking. Maybe they would have been first again? If so, have they not been included because it was interesting that the former were those of Mercadona? And to all this I add a new doubt: having won the Dodot diapers, which are what many parents consider the leading brand, would this type of analysis be talked about so much? Because of course, the surprising thing is that the best ones are the ones you least expect them to win, no matter how cheap.

On the other hand, the opinion of the parents? I understand that it is very interesting to know what they think, but in many cases the opinion can be totally subjective. Did they give them diapers without a brand or did they see perfectly what they were? Because it is not the same to put my son in white diapers, without knowing what brand they are and punctuate them, than to see that I am putting on a Dodot diaper and that tomorrow I will put on a white label, which can offer me less confidence and affect the score final.

Mind you, I don't want to detract from the analysis or say it's fraudulent. It would be necessary to be there to see how they are made and to be clear that there is no trap or cardboard, but all those unknowns detract from the end result, above all, the absence of the winner of the previous analysis. In my view it is something incomprehensible and unforgivable.

PS: Comment, finally, that before writing this post, we contacted the OCU directly so that it would pass us the analysis data, with the intention, in addition, to answer these questions that I have just raised. We do not receive any response.

UPGRADE (05/05/2015): As Belend tells us in a comment there is a section in the magazine that had gone unnoticed where he says that diaper prices were looked at in January and that Lidl and Auchan (Alcampo) diapers have not been included because they are changing range. 3 days ago I was in Lidl and there I could buy the ones that I have been buying for 3 years, which were next to those of a range that appeared a couple of years ago, much finer, that apparently they intended to sell as a definitive range. They were on sale one or two months as unique diapers and then returned the thickest, to stay with the new ones. I imagine that users such thin diapers did not convince them at all. I say this because if the analyzes were done at the beginning of the year they could have included the usual Lidl (they deserve it for having won the previous analysis) or having waited a bit for the new range, I repeat, I have not seen in the super, because they are, in theory, the rival to beat.

UPDATE 2 (05/14/2015): After contacting Lidl to find out if they were actually changing the range, as the OCU explains, they tell us that it's not like that. Yes it is possible that at the time of the analysis they did not find the diapers in the store because in the last months they have changed the format in which the diapers come, but the diaper has not changed: remains exactly the same (I understand that if you intend to make an analysis the logical thing is to analyze the diaper equally, even when you do not find it in the store for a change of the packaging format, requesting it directly from the supermarket chain).

UPDATE 2 (10/24/2018): According to the OCU, the list of the 10 best diapers in 2018 is as follows: 1.Eroski baby diapers / 2. Carrefour baby ultra / 3. Carrefour eco planet / 4. Dodot basic / 5. Prenatal love & care / 6. Moltex bio baby / 7. Dia Baby Smile / 8. Deliplus (MERCADONA) diapers / 9. Moltex Premium / 10.
