Talk in sign language with the baby (video)

A few days ago we were talking about a language method signs to talk with babies, My Smart Hands, a methodology quite often in countries like Canada or the United States and from which we get the information in Spanish. In this video we see this in action Psychomotor stimulation educational program based on sign language for babies.

In the images we can see how the mother communicates with her baby. But if you look, we do not appreciate much difference in what we usually live with our babies without applying any "method." That is, the mother asks with words (although she helps herself with the signs shown) and the baby answers with her words (abbreviations, onomatopoeia, specific sounds) accompanied by the signs she has learned.

That is, just as my oldest daughter said (and says) "elephant" raising her arm and imitating the animal's bar, for example. That my daughter was not starting to make it as small as the baby in the images, it may be. But it wasn't that important either.

Their smiles, their cries, their pointing fingers or directed arms, their “ma” for “more”, “Mar”, “mom”, their “no”, their “you”, their “guide”… almost always helped us to understand her

I have rarely felt the need to “expand vocabulary,” something that happens naturally and progressively in all babies without problems. One of the "claims" to sell this method is that it reduces the frustration of the baby, but perhaps they should say of the parents.

I don't know why we insist on advancing what will come by the baby's own maturation, to walk, to control the sphincters, to sleep all night, to talk ...

I have already commented on my considerations about this system, which I think may be useful in some cases (children with hearing difficulties, intellectual disability) and that parents use to a greater or lesser extent with our babies, without the need to establish a closed code .

That is, my baby can ask me for his toy by pointing or bowing his head, or expressing that he wants water by saying “ga” or putting his thumb to his mouth… The way babies communicate is incredibly rich and complex since its inception.

In any case, this method is intended to advance symbolic communication with the baby (all language is symbolic, already spoken, and signs), and in the images we see that the baby is already able to speak through words, his words, syllables and sounds It's okay to be accompanied by hand and arm movements in sign language, I think it exercises motor skills.

If you want to speak in sign language to a greater extent, you can take some of the gestures we see in this video of the mother communicating with the baby to apply them with your children. But our own signs and words will also serve to establish a particular communication with babies that without realizing it will become much more complex and complete in a few months.
