Having a son to save his brother

As you know, just born in Seville the first "baby medicine" in Spain designed to cure his brother six years old suffering from severe congenital anemia.

Javier Mariscal, the baby in the photo, has been conceived through preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) to prevent the baby from being born with the same disease as his brother, and at the same time an identical histocompatibility profile (HLA) has been achieved for that the stem cells of his umbilical cord were compatible to treat his older brother, Andres. Thanks to his little brother, Andrés has between 70% and 90% chance of growing up without the illness he was born with.

The controversy has not taken in unleashing. There are those who see it as a great scientific milestone, while some sectors believe that by selecting and manipulating an embryo to be compatible with their brother other embryos are discarded (in this case 16) that are as children of the couple as the sick brother .

Of course, it is a thorny issue. Surely many of you have an opinion formed about it. To value it myself, I have asked myself a question. What would I do if I found myself in the skin of those parents? I don't have to think the answer too much: I would have done the same.

For his part, I believe that the baby will not have come into the world exclusively to save his brother. That is, it does not come to fulfill the function of a medication and that's it, but when considering the various possibilities to cure your sick child, the idea of having another child that could save him, as desired as the previous one or more, will have arisen. since he will come to allege life, like any son, and also bring hope to his brother.

Of course, it is my opinion. I would like to know yours to exchange views. What would you do if you were in the same situation as these parents?
