Children who eat more bread are less overweight

It may sound strange, since for many years bread has been one of the foods indicated when the words overweight or obesity appeared, but the conclusion reached after a study of 504 school children is that Children who eat more bread are less overweight.

To do the study, children were divided into two groups according to their daily bread consumption (those who drank more than 80 grams per day and those who drank less). They collected data at that time and, to compare, they gave all two more servings of bread daily.

Children who initially ate more bread they were less overweight (15.8% were overweight and 13.9% obese) than those who consumed less bread (16.6% were overweight and 20.5% obese).

Likewise, those who ate more bread had a more adequate diet observing the percentage of calories that came from carbohydrates, proteins or fats and better blood parameters related to cardiovascular risk (cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol).

It was also observed that those who ate more bread ended up taking more fiber (18.6 g / day) than those who did not eat as much (16.2 g / day). The figures were also better in other nutrients such as Vitamin B3, magnesium, Vitamin A, ...

Once you have seen the situation at the specific time of the study two servings of white bread were added daily to see what changes occurred.

An improvement in the caloric profile of the diets was observed, since the energy from carbohydrates was increased (reaching 47% instead of the previous 44%) and that from lipids decreased (from 40% to 37 %).

The amount of vitamin B1, folic acid, zinc and iodine increased, increasing the percentage of children who eat healthy diets throughout the day.

The conclusion that is finally drawn from the study is quite logical (at least it is the one I draw). Children who eat more bread eat less "crap." Bread consumption in our country has declined greatly in recent decades. When we were small both breakfast and snack were made up of sandwiches (and not small precisely). Now the sandwich has disappeared to make way for juices, drinkable yogurts, chocolate cookies, etc. Normal that those who eat less bread gain more weight, if replaced by this type of food.
