There are so many different points of view about different things in relation to parenting, care and decision making about the lives of our children, that it is quite common to read in large social networks and long debates between parents who think differently.
Recently, who has caused a stir on social networks has been Enedina Vance, mother of a six-month-old baby, when she published A photograph of her daughter with a pierced cheek. But things are not what they seem.
Enedina is considered an "inactivist" (from English inactivist, of "intact" and "activist"), because it is totally against any type of modification in the body of babies and children, call circumcision, perforations, etc.
To prove a point about this, she decided to do a social experiment and posted on her Facebook account. a photograph of his little daughter where we can see the piercing that apparently placed him on the cheek.
And to cause an even bigger impact, Enedina accompanies her daughter's image and piercing with a fairly direct and strong message:
So I took my daughter to have her cheek pierced!
It looks very pretty, right? I just know she will love him! She will thank me when I'm older lol, if she decides she doesn't like it, she can just take it off, no problem.
I am the mother, she is MY DAUGHTER, I will do what I want! I will make all her decisions until she turns 18, I made her, I am her owner! I don't need anyone's permission, I think it's better, prettier and I prefer it with its perforated cheek.
It is NOT abuse! If so it would be illegal, but it is not. People punch their babies every day and this is no different.
MY BABY, MY DECISION! DECISION OF THE PARENTS, RIGHTS OF THE PARENTS! Don't judge my motherhood, we all raise our children differently, it's none of your business anyway!
The message and the image have enraged hundreds of people and since its publication Enedina has received death threats and hate messages, among which many people have said they will call social services to take custody of their daughter.
What some did not notice, was the sarcasm that the mother used to prove a point about the subject that she defends so much: not to modify the body of the babies, referring specifically to circumcision. In another publication Enedina clarified that obviously the image of his daughter with the piercing had been altered with Photoshop and what he was trying to show was that just as they infuriated a baby piercing, they should do so by allowing them to cut their skin at the time of circumcision.
The issue of circumcision has always been controversial because opinions are divided. Enedina for example, who lives in the United Kingdom, says that in that country It is a medical procedure that is considered as a last resort and is done only if necessary.
This is totally the opposite in the United States, where it is a very common practice and that in many cases is done by custom and without being necessary. Recall that the American Academy of Pediatrics in 2012 declared itself in favor of circumcising babies. In their posture they say that they don't think it necessary to do it, but it has more advantages than risks for babies.
