He was born with 368 grams and after four months in the ICU he was discharged to receive the new year at home

We have shared stories of premature babies who have managed to get ahead against all odds, and today, that of a baby named Lailie Victoria, is the story of one of the smallest premature newborns who have managed to survive.

After more than four months in the ICU, on December 29 Lailie Victoria was discharged just in time to welcome her new year at home. He was born with 26 weeks of gestation and a weight of just 368 grams. It was so tiny that it fit in the palm of one hand.

Lailie was born on August 12, 2017 at Baptist Children's Hospital in Miami, fourteen weeks before the probable date of delivery, and although there are babies born with less gestation time (the world's most premature baby was born with 21 weeks), his weight should have been approximately double what he presented at birth. According to the gestgram, which indicates the measurements and weight of the fetus week by week, the expected weight of the baby with 26 weeks of gestation is estimated at 700 grams.

But it has not been the smallest. The baby born with less weight than is recorded, also in the 26th week of gestation, came to the world with 225 grams at birth and her foot was practically with a nail.

Dr. Andrew Kairalla, head of pediatrics and director of the ICU of the hospital, remembers that babies born with less than 400 grams rarely survive, but Lailie has proven to be a true fighter.

He has been through many difficulties during the last four months, such as the development of the lungs, one of the most common complications, and intestinal problems, with which he still struggles.

Having gained weight, has gone home with 2.3 kilos, and although it is still too early to assess the consequences associated with prematurity, your prognosis is very good.
