Elsa could have a girlfriend in 'Frozen 2', will she be Disney's first gay princess?

If you have children, you surely know the 'Frozen' movie. Although probably, if you do not have maybe you also know about it or it has been your turn to listen to its famous songs on occasion. And it has been one of the most successful films of recent years, because of the powerful message it sends about love between sisters.

Now, this movie is news again, after the statements of his co-director Jennifer Lee, about the possibility that Elsa has a girlfriend in 'Frozen 2'. Will she be Disney's first gay princess?

A love story, but different

In addition to his characters, music, atmosphere and history in general, 'Frozen' stands out from the rest of Disney movies by not focusing on the classic love story between prince and princess, despite being love the key point of the whole movie. In it, the love we see is that which exists between the protagonist sisters, Anna and Elsa, and that is capable of breaking the curse of ice that has fallen on Arendelle.

And it is that 'Frozen' It is a tribute to love in all its presentations: from the parents of Anna and Elsa, who do everything possible to protect their daughters, the love we see between Kristoff and his "adoptive family", the relationship that arises between Anna and Kristoff, as well as one of the most important: the self-esteem, that we see being born in Elsa by "breaking free" and stop hiding who she really is.

In itself, 'Frozen' leaves us a very valuable and important message: Love is not only a couple, and it is something very powerful that can do great things.

A girlfriend for Elsa?

Some time ago we talked about the controversy caused by a request that went viral worldwide: that Elsa had a girlfriend. This arose because some people believe that it is necessary that there is already visibility in Disney movies, and thus no child does not feel excluded or rejected because they have two parents, two mothers or their sexual tendency.

Now, the issue comes up again after the statements of Jennifer Lee, co-director of Frozen, about this request. In an interview for Huffington Post, they asked for their opinion about the possibility that Elsa had a girlfriend in the second installment of Frozen, to which she replied the following:

I love everything that people are saying and thinking about our movie, that it is creating dialogue and that Elsa is a wonderful character that speaks to many people. It means the world to us, being part of those conversations.

Regarding where we are going with that, we are having hundreds of conversations about it, and we are being very conscientious about these things. For me ... Elsa tells me every day where she needs to go, and so she will continue telling us. I always write from her perspective, and from where Elsa is and what she is doing in her life, she tells me every day. We will see where it goes.

Although his answer does not confirm the rumor about the possibility that Elsa is the first homosexual protagonist of Disney, neither does he give us a refusal. Given the background of 'Frozen' and its representation of other types of love, other than those of classic Disney movies, you might think it is a very likely option to occur.

Public opinion is divided

As you could imagine, this is an issue that has caused a lot of controversy and people's opinions have not been long in coming. Everyone has their arguments to express whether or not they agree that Elsa is the first openly gay main character of Disney.

On the one hand, there are those who are in favor, because they consider that it is time for a character to represent the gay community in the wide universe of Disney. His argument is that times are evolving and changing, therefore, it is necessary that this also be reflected in these films.

Another argument in favor, is that by including Elsa's girlfriend in 'Frozen 2', it would help to normalize behaviors typical of modern society, thus promoting equality, inclusion and tolerance. What better than something as big as Disney, to help normalize the situation of thousands of children and families.

On the other hand, there are those who oppose Elsa being a lesbian, due to several factors. One of them is that some people they believe that the audience of 'Frozen' is too young and innocent to address the issue of homosexuality, and that should be left for a slightly older audience and closer to adolescence.

And we also find many Catholic parents and organizations that have proclaimed themselves against and even openly requested that a lesbian princess not be included in the second part of 'Frozen', arguing that with that they would go against the traditional family model and stop transmitting universal values just to satisfy a minority.

But besides, there is a third current in this whole issue of whether Elsa has a partner or not. And there are other people who simply oppose Elsa having a relationship, regardless of whether it is with a man or a woman, because they like the message that we don't need anyone else to be happy. Just be ourselves and accept us as we are.

At the moment, the co-director does not confirm or deny it, but leaves it in the air, and We will have to keep waiting to know what will happen, because 'Frozen 2' will hit theaters until the end of 2019, so there is still enough time to know with certainty what follows in the lives of Anna and Elsa.
