First biventricular intervention to a child in Spain

The medicine does not fail to provide high life expectancy, in this case to a 5-year-old boy who suffers from dilated cardiomyopathy. This pathology affects the cavities of the heart and weakens them, the little one has a larger than normal heart but with a functionality of 10%, so he had a very small ability to pump the blood to the rest of the body.

He La Paz Hospital, in Madrid, has made the first biventricular intervention to a child in Spain, and so far the little one is recovering, although the battle is not yet won.

The intervention, carried out by 25 professionals from the Madrid center and two German doctors who know the system, has given the child's heart a rest, an artificial heart is the one that now helps pump his blood. The implantation of an external oxygenator is very complex, this device is connected directly to the heart of the child and this, in turn, is connected to an external machine that is operated by computer. The artificial heart helps pump the blood to reach the entire organism, the left ventricle drives the blood into the aorta and from the right ventricle pumps the blood into the lungs.

When the child was admitted last month with a great clinical deterioration, an extracorporeal circulation machine (ECMO) was connected, but the child did not improve, so it was decided to perform this intervention, although in Spain this technique was still beginning to be implemented Fortunately it has been a success.

Your heart has returned to its normal state and is recovering ventricular activity, but it is not yet known whether or not a heart transplant will be necessary, because in some cases, the heart regains its contractility.
