Voluntary abortions in Colombia from the age of 14

I thought age could be a mistake. But no. They are fourteen years old, not eighteen.

In Colombia, just seven months ago, voluntary abortion ceased to be considered a crime and is still shaping the new regulations amid a climate of controversy and reactions.

There are three situations for which abortion in that country is not penalized. If the pregnancy is the result of a rape, if there is a risk of malformation of the fetus or death of the pregnant woman.

The government has just authorized health centers to practice abortions for any of those three cases to girls of fourteen.

Because they are just that, girls. And the most serious: no authorization from parents or an adult is required.

Private centers and those linked to religious activities are exempt from performing these practices.

Beyond the debate about abortion, whether it is right or wrong, I do not consider myself who to judge, it seems irresponsible to leave such a strong decision in girls of that age as to terminate a pregnancy.

It is true that in Latin American countries, unfortunately, there are many girls who suffer rapes. But I am not going to do that, but to allow abortion to be a step that a fourteen-year-old girl can take without the consent or support of an adult.

And more if she has just been raped, to learn that her baby has some malformation or if there is a risk of life.

Do you think that a is a decision that can be made alone at that age?
