Taking nutritional supplements during pregnancy reduces infant mortality

Part of the infant deaths that occur in the world, especially in underdeveloped countries, could be avoided if future moms take nutritional supplementsThis is shown in a study prepared by a group of experts from the University of Mataram (Indonesia). This study concludes that it is not enough to provide future mothers with iron and folic acid supplements, it is necessary to supplement these supplements with different vitamins and minerals.

Logically, the diet that is followed in these countries does not provide the necessary elements that allow an adequate development of future babies, the lack of means requires little food and low nutritional load.

The study took data from 31,290 pregnant women who were divided into two groups, on the one hand, a first group that was given iron and folic acid supplements along with the diet they followed. The second group received a nutritional supplement that included, in addition to the elements of the first group, various vitamins, A, B1, B2, B6, B12, D, E and various minerals such as zinc or selenium among others. The results are very noticeable, in the second group there was a reduction of up to 18% chance of babies dying during the first 90 days compared to the first group. In addition, women in this group who suffered from anemia or malnutrition, managed to reduce the chances of the baby dying in the first 90 days of life by up to 38%. Spontaneous abortions were also reduced, as were the risks of future babies being born with low weight.

Obviously it is a study that supports what was already known, it is necessary to enjoy an adequate diet during pregnancy that allows the future baby to receive all the necessary elements for its development. To reduce infant mortality considerably, it will be necessary to combine several factors, nutrition, hygiene, sanitary means, etc., unfortunately they are factors that do not come together and there is always some type of lack.

It will be difficult for the Millennium Goals to be fulfilled and more now, with the rise of biofuel, one of the most used foods to alleviate hunger in the third world, cereals, has wildly increased its cost and reserves are no longer available world cereals of which many underdeveloped countries lived. The studies are of no use and after obtaining the data, the appropriate measures are not taken to alleviate the problem.
