World Breastfeeding Week 2008

From August 1 to 7, the World Breastfeeding Week, the largest social movement in favor of breastfeeding.

This year, the motto is “Support for mothers: we go for gold” coinciding with the imminent start of the Beijing Olympic Games. WABA (World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action), the World Alliance for Breastfeeding, wanted to make a parallel with the sporting event to compare the preparation required by athletes with what mothers need.

Mothers need:

• Receive reliable and updated information as soon as possible • Encouragement and support • Experienced and practical help • Be heard

The goals of this year are:

• Increase awareness of the need and value of supporting nursing mothers • Disseminate updated information on breastfeeding support • Create optimal conditions to offer support to mothers at all stages

To achieve an effective result, mothers need the support of a support network based on five rings (again the comparison with the Olympics): family and social network, health care, government and legislation, workplaces and employment and response to crises and emergency.

In Babies and more, we also believe that information is the best preparation available to a mother to give her baby the gift of breastfeeding. Recall that the WHO (World Health Organization) recommends exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months and then supplemented with the introduction of food until two years.
