Probiotics to treat constipated babies

A few days ago we commented that the probiotic lactobacillus reuteri could be a good solution for colic and now we know that it probiotic could also be beneficial to treat constipated babies.

The function of these "good" bacteria is to balance bacterial populations in the intestines, preventing them from causing damage and disease. These could help relieve the symptoms of children with chronic constipation, one of the most common gastrointestinal problems in childhood.

It is very common for constipation to appear in babies when solid feeding begins to be introduced, starting at six months.

A study conducted at the University of Naples, Italy, has proven the effects of the probiotic lactobacillus reuteri in children who did not go to the bathroom regularly.

At the beginning of the study, the babies moved the intestines less than three times a week, while at the eighth week of administering probiotics once a day, they did so five times.

Constipation is sometimes very problematic for the baby, who cries without comfort, has gut pain and becomes extremely irritable. In fact, another study talked about that constipated children could have behavioral problems because this constant discomfort ends up affecting their character.

Probiotics have no side effects, so if their benefits are corroborated (more studies will be needed), it could be a more natural and better tolerated solution than medications.

However, experts do not recommend using probiotics as a first step, but first try others, such as modifying the baby's diet by providing more fiber and fluids.
