Drinking a cup of coffee a day during pregnancy is safe

Several investigations have brought to light the risk of caffeine consumption during pregnancy. It is linked to the risk of abortion and preterm birth, however a review by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has shown that consuming a cup of coffee a day during pregnancy is safe.

Moderate consumption of caffeine, about 200 milligrams daily, does not contribute significantly to cause abortions or preterm births, as they have been able to conclude from the studies carried out.

This measure is roughly equivalent to caffeine that contains a 350-milliliter cup of coffee. But caffeine is not only found in coffee. It is also the equivalent of drinking four cups of 240 milliliter tea, more than five 350 ml soda cans a day, or eating six or seven bars of dark chocolate.

The maximum dose of 200 milligrams daily is the one that has been recommended through several studies, some of which we have referred to in the blog. We have also talked about someone who believes that coffee increases the risk of abortion, even if taken in moderation.

However, the research that is in favor of moderate consumption is quite precise in terms of quantity and all agree that overcoming this recommended measure would be related to an increased risk of abortion and premature delivery, since caffeine crosses the placenta affecting the development of the baby in gestation.

Still, there are pregnant women unable to give up their cups of coffee, although their consumption exceeds the recommended. The advisable thing is at least reduce daily consumption to one cup of coffee per day.
