The use of adapted milks from 12 months to debate

The market for baby milks is wide and diverse. We can find starter milks up to six months, continuation milks for children older than 6 months and growth milks starting at twelve months.

Before the year nobody doubts that cow's milk is not recommended for babies, so the option is clear, or you give the milk type 1 or beginning the twelve months, or from six you change it for the Type 2 milk (leaving aside breast milk, which we all know is the ideal diet).

After twelve months, however, the question of what to do appears. A baby can continue drinking milk then you can drink growing milk and you can also drink cow's milk. The need (or need) to give growth milk for the period starting at 12 months and now the German Ministry of Food He has created a report to try to shed some light on this matter.

Are growth milks recommended?

As mentioned in that report, the added nutrients (let's not forget that they are enriched milks) can be covered with a healthy diet, so it is not necessary to focus on the consumption of this type of milk. In fact, the poorly controlled content of some of these nutrients makes increase the risk of excessive intake.

Given this situation, the recommendation of this report is, from the year on, to drink natural, unmodified and unenriched cow's milk, that is, milk from which we adults drink.

What milk to give to children, whole or skimmed?

Fats have a very bad reputation, so in addition to eliminating them as much as possible from our diets we also tend to eliminate them from our children's diet, when it turns out that we need them. It also turns out that they need fat even more than us, because they are growing and because their brains, which are developing at a dizzying pace, need fatty acids to continue doing so.

For this reason it is recommended to give whole milk to children and after two years, begin to assess the need to offer semi-skimmed or skimmed dairy products, always depending on the diet of each child (if you already receive fats from fish and other foods you could take semi-skimmed, for example).
