A mother has twins 26 days after the birth of her first child: a strange case of a didelfo womb

It happened in Bangladesh. Arifa Sultana, 20, He gave birth to his first child of natural birth. He went home and after 26 days he returned to the hospital for severe pain in his abdomen, not knowing what was happening to him. And their dizygotic twins (twins) were born, of those who did not even know its existence.

That's when doctors discovered that Arifa you have two wombs, a congenital anomaly called didelphys or didelfo, which allows babies to grow in two different wombs.

An exceptional case

Arifa Sultana gave birth to a child at the end of February after a normal delivery at a hospital in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The mother and the baby were discharged and less than four weeks later, the mother was re-admitted to another center.

“He came to the hospital complaining of pain in the lower abdomen”explained gynecologist Sheila Poddar of the Ad-Din hospital. It was then that the doctors performed an ultrasound and realized that Sultana was pregnant with twins.

Sultana has two wombs, a condition called didelphys uterus. His first baby and the twins were conceived and grew up in separate wombs.

The doctor explains that nobody realized that she was waiting for three babies in different wombs, because they had not done any ultrasound during pregnancy.

But Dr. Poddar performed an emergency caesarean section and the twins were born. Luckily, as the gynecologist clarified, "The three children and the mother are healthy and back home."

What is the didelfo or double uterus

The double uterus is a rare congenital anomaly that only affects between one and two percent of women. As explained in the Mayo Clinic, the uterus of the fetus begins to develop as two small tubes and then come together to create the largest thin organ.

"Sometimes, however, the tubes do not join completely. Each one develops separately and with an independent structure. The double uterus can have a single cervix towards the vagina, or each uterine cavity can have a cervix. in many cases, there is a thin wall of tissue along the entire vagina, which generates two separate uterine necks. "

They also clarify that women with double uterus usually have normal pregnancies, although this anomaly may increase the risk of having a miscarriage or premature delivery. The problem is that it does not cause any symptoms and "It can only be discovered during a routine pelvic exam or during diagnostic imaging tests to determine the cause of repeated miscarriages."

And in this case, in addition, to the unlikely case of having two wombs, the fact of having twins or twins is attached, and not discovering the double pregnancy until the time of delivery.

However, unfortunately, in rural areas of Bangladesh "Women don't know what's wrong with them. They don't know how many children are pregnant and sometimes they don't even know they are pregnant.", explained Dr. SN Basu, chief of obstetrics and gynecology at Max Healthcare Hospital in New Delhi.

Hopefully this situation will improve soon and mothers and their children have access to all the medical advances that can save their lives.
