What safety measures do daycare centers have to take?

This week we have seen two bad news in children care centers and therefore we will dedicate this article to inform about some of the requirements that nurseries must meet to be safe places. When we choose a center of this type, parents worry about the attention that the children will receive in the children's center where we will leave them for many hours each day.

The law that establishes the requirements that nurseries must meet is established in the General Law of the Educational System also called LOGSE and in the Organic Law of Education or LOE, but also each Autonomous Community has its own regulations to try to increase safety and hygiene in them.

One of the things that parents should check is that the center chosen has the administrative authorization of operation, since even if it had been, it can be withdrawn if they fail to meet the requirements in terms of facilities, hygiene, sanitary and safety regulations and of course the conservation of the building where it is located.

The requirements that the law contemplates are: that it has an exclusive place and with independent access; that it has duly qualified personnel in an equal number to that of the classrooms plus one; that the number of students per classroom must be respected, establishing the following:

  • From 0 to 1 year: a maximum of 8 children.
  • From 1 to 2 years: maximum of 13 students.
  • From 2 to 3 years: maximum of 20 students.
  • From 3 to 6 years: maximum of 25 children.

It must also have a multipurpose enclosure of at least 30 meters that can be used as a dining room and with a playground for every nine classes or for every 75 square meters.

You must also have a bathroom for each classroom for children aged 2 to 3 years who have at least two toilets and two sinks and must be accessible and visible from the classroom. For nursery staff must have a separate toilet separate from the kids with sink, shower and toilet.

As for the security measures not required by law, it is important that parents inquire about hospitals and specific areas nearby and consult those responsible about whether they conduct fire drills with children.

It is necessary to see if the center has marked safety exits, if the windows are resistant and we must not think that by asking all that about the safety of our children, we will seem hysterical or heavy, the first are the kids.
