The Children's Registry is the way for the world's children to be recognized as full citizens

Lara Álvarez and Marco Rocha are presenters in the Tele Cinco network, and last month they participated in the El Cubo de Cuatro contest, in order to raise funds for the PLAN International Children's Registration Campaign. They donated the amount earned to PLAN, which is one of the largest NGOs in the world. The vision of this organization is that of a world in which all children develop their potential in societies that respect the rights of people and their dignity.

Every year they are born in the world 51 million children who are not registered and therefore do not have a birth certificate. Each person who supports and defends child registration is another lever in the way of ensuring that all children in the world can be recognized as full citizens. In its child registration programs PLAN works with governments so that facilitate access to registration centers and guarantee the free process. In addition, it promotes the use of SMS for registration, the creation of mobile units that approach communities for registration and training as registrars of health workers who attend births.

In five years PLAN has helped enroll more than 40 million people, mostly children, in 32 countries and has improved the laws of 10 countries, allowing 153 million children to obtain the certificate for free.

But why is the Children's Registry important?

Article 7 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child speaks of child registration, and states that "the child shall be registered immediately after birth and shall have the right from birth to a name, to acquire a nationality and to be cared for by his parents". However, every year about 50 million children are not registered at birth
  • Child registration provides access to medical treatment and education.

  • Protection against sexual exploitation, child prostitution and early marriage

  • It is easier to get a job, process a passport and vote.

  • Protection before the law, having a birth certificate that establishes your age. This reduces the vulnerability of minors to be victims of abuse, such as child labor, premature military service and human trafficking.

He Southeast Asia is the area of the world that has the highest percentage of absence of child registration. It is estimated that about 68% of new births are not registered.

I support the “Every Boy and Girl Counts” campaign of PLAN. You have to make people aware of the importance of child registration, ”says Lara Álvarez. "Once you are aware of the lack of rights of the child if you are not registered, you realize how necessary it is something as simple as a birth certificate."

The birth certificate obtained thanks to the child registry offers them recognition as a person before the law, and helps to safeguard rights such as inheritance, land ownership and voting.
