Reading books is a leisure activity for children between 10 and 13 years old

Today the conclusions of the Barometer of Reading Habits and Purchase of Books 2012 prepared by the Federation of Publishers Guilds of Spain have been published.

Among the data related to reading in children under 14 years of age, it should be noted that the number of eBook readers reaches 13.1%, and that 84.6% of these children read books in their free time. Of them, 77.2 percent do it daily or weekly. All children aged 10 to 13 read at least once a quarter: 100% books, 47% magazines, 36.3% comics and 26.3% newspapers.

Girls prefer to read magazines and boys comics and newspapers. In this age group, the percentage of children who read in digital format is 50.5%, although only 13.1% of them read books (the rest consult blogs, forums and websites).

In general terms and for all types of population, the digital media used for reading are headed by the computer, however the reading in the e-Reader has increased fivefold since 2010. The increase in the use of electronic devices for Reading has also occurred in those who are not only intended to read, as is the case with tablets and smartphones

More than three quarters of children ensure that their parents read at home regularly and 90.7% that have bought or given them books in the last year.

95% affirm that their parents read to them when they were young, this statement catches my attention because although I understand that a 13-year-old boy does not want his parents to read him at night, with 10 years many of them still require him, even to enjoy contact with your dad or mom and do an activity that - in itself - is pleasant and relaxing

Almost all of the children surveyed affirm that their teachers encourage them to read, and 91.1% say that their schools carry out activities around reading and books.

The books of Gerónimo Stilton, by Elisabetta Dami, The Harry Potter saga, by J.K. Rowling and Greg Kin's Diary, by Jeff Kinney, are the books most read by children between 10 and 13 years old.

As we see the data has increased a pocor regarding those published by the barometer last year, and interesting information related to reading in digital format and the promotion of reading in schools have also been obtained.
