Go camping pregnant, why not?

Women who have already camped will feel much safer on these issues while those who have never had this camping experience may have doubts. Recently Laura asked us in our Answers section: Is it dangerous to go camping while pregnant, in the first trimester?

That is why we are going to try to explain if you can go camping while pregnant, what you have to take into account in this situation to enjoy the experience without risks and when would be the best time to do it.

We can go camping while pregnant whenever there is no risk for pregnancy and we are well to make that trip. In addition, certain health conditions are necessary, which are assumed in regulated campsites but can be more complicated in free camping.

In reality, there are no great rules to follow in a camping, simply the same ones that we follow in our day to day and that we should not neglect in this environment: personal hygiene and in the meals so as not to have setbacks.

The pregnant woman should take special care with the following aspects given the generally rustic characteristics of the campsites (as we would do on an excursion, in the park, after going to the pool ...):

  • If we bathe in the pool or in a river, lake ... you have to make sure that the water is suitable for bathing and showering after it to avoid the risk of infections. During pregnancy there is a higher risk of vaginal infections, so we must carry a proper hygiene after bathing.

  • The theme of the shower is complicated if it is free camping, so you have to manage to maintain proper hygiene. It is easy with motorhome water tanks, and if not, you can use bottles, sterilized water ...; intimate hygiene wipes may occasionally serve, but running water is always better for that purpose.

  • Care for currents and depth in natural waters, as well as safety advice for swimming pools during pregnancy if we exercise.

  • If we touch the earth or anything that has been in contact with animal feces, we must wash our hands thoroughly to avoid the risk of toxoplasmosis.

  • The food must be prepared with the correct safety and hygiene conditions, the food must be safe for this stage. Well-washed or peeled fruits and vegetables, watch out for certain raw foods, well-cooked fish and meat ...

  • We should not neglect our dental health in this environment.

  • The outdoors carry the risk of sunburn if we are too exposed to the sun and especially in summer. We must continue taking care of the skin and hair during pregnancy.

Anyway, as you can see, it is a matter of common sense and that in a little way they differ from those that we would take into account if we go to a hotel, a restaurant or even in a park or at home. In any case, always taking into account the recommendations to travel safely during pregnancy.

And since we have clear measures to follow to enjoy camping, let's move on to the following question: When to go camping?

When camping during pregnancy, what is the best time?

At this point, as in so many other issues, we have to appeal again to common sense. Any pregnant woman feels that she should take special care, and if there are no risks to pregnancy, the campsite or the camping area are nearby and we are well, Why not travel at any time?

However, it is often said that the second trimester is the best for traveling, when the woman still does not feel too heavy and uncomfortable and has already passed the discomforts typical of the beginning of pregnancy.

Personally if I had gone camping during pregnancy I would have chosen that second trimesterIn fact, I remember a trip in the third quarter (although he went to a hotel) and I did not feel comfortable enough, neither to sleep, nor to drive, enjoy the food…

If it is the first time you go camping it is logical that questions arise, then you have to warn that sometimes comfort is not desired and especially in the final stretch of pregnancy is when it will cost us more to get used to a different “bed” (if it is hard for us to sleep in ours…).

And although many campsites have cabins and houses that are nothing different from a hotel, with beds and a mattress, I do not want to imagine what it would have meant in those moments of my pregnancy to have to sleep on the floor, in a sack or a mat .

Anyway, as they say, every pregnancy is a world, and you may be lucky to find a great time almost to the end. Also, if the campsite is close to home and also We have a hospital nearby in case the time of delivery arrives and we can move without problems, it is the decision of each one, as long as the advice we have commented before is followed.

Of course, it is not advisable to leave the trip if there is a risk of premature delivery, we are approaching or we have already reached the expected date of delivery or we have begun to feel frequent contractions, unless we are willing to give birth in full nature .

In short, yes you are pregnant, you are well and you are willing to spend a few days relaxing in a campsite, also with young children, prepare the suitcase and do not forget the basic questions to enjoy the experience without risks.
