The number of large families in Spain increased in 2018: one in five are single parents

The types of families are changing. And that reality is even more evident after knowing the statistics of large family titles of 2018 published by the Ministry of Health, Consumption and Social Welfare.

According to their numbers, In 2018 there were 696,798 large families throughout Spain, three percent more than the previous year. Of these, 145,382 are single parents, 20.9% of the total.

Two million children are large families

According to the latest statistics, 85% of the titles of large families in force in 2018 correspond to families of Spanish nationality and only 15% to other nationalities.

  • 61.7% of large families have three children.

  • 21.55% have two children.

  • Only 11.11% of large families have four children.

  • 15,150 families have five children, 3,680 with six, 1,093 with seven, 510 with eight and 192 with nine.

Of the 55,350 new titles of 2018, 89.5% are general category titles, while 10.5% belong to the special category.

And is that According to the number of children, large families fall into two categories:

  • General. Family unit consisting of three or four children, or two children if one of them or one of the parents has a disability. Also in the case of a widowed parent with two children.

  • Special. With five or more children, or with four children, of which at least three come from childbirth, adoption or multiple permanent or pre-adoptive foster care.

In order for family units with four children to be classified in the special category, the annual income divided by the number of members that comprise them, must not exceed 75 percent of the current interprofessional minimum wage (900 euros per month), including extraordinary payments.

Single-parent families, headed by a woman

The latest statistics show that in 2018 the number of single-parent families has increased by 55,350 compared to the previous year and, that of them, 79.7% are made up of only one mother and her children (115.887).

Only 29,495 large families are headed by a parent as the only ascendant.

Large families, more frequent in Andalusia

138,620 titles are in force in the Andalusian community, the first on the list. It is followed by Catalonia, with 125,626, and Madrid with 115,575.

By the tail, Soria appears in the first place, with only 992 large families, Ourense (1,140) and Lugo (1,144).

Who are large families?

According to Law 40/2003, of November 18, on the Protection of Large Families, a large family is considered to:

  • The one made up of one or two parents and three or more children, whether common or not.

  • The one formed by one or two parents with two children, whether or not they are common, provided that at least one of the children has a disability greater than 33%, or is unable to work.

  • It consists of two parents with disabilities and two children, when one of the parents has a total degree of disability equal to or greater than 65%, or both a degree of disability greater than 33%, or is (are) unable to work.

  • The family formed by a separated or divorced father (or mother), with three or more children, even if they are in different family units.

  • The one composed of a widowed father (or mother) with two or more children.

  • The family unit with two or more orphaned brothers of father and mother under guardianship, in foster care or guardianship.

  • They are also a large family, if there are three or more orphaned siblings of father and mother, over 18 years (or two if one of them is disabled) who live and depend on them economically.

According to the latest statistical data of the Ministry of Health, Consumer Affairs and Social Binestar, as of December 31, 2018, 99,962 large families out of 696,798 had a child with a disability.

Multiple benefits

Currently, large families have a series of tax and state benefits that can be applied for as long as the large family title is in force.

They go through deductions in the Declaration of Income, preference when obtaining a scholarship, reductions or exemptions of fees and prices in public education, discounts on public transport, reductions in regional and local rates, which vary according to the place of residence ... And even advantages and discounts in private companies.
