Understand the child with Asperger Syndrome

Every February 18 marks the International Asperger Syndrome Day, a date to raise awareness about this Autism Spectrum Disorder, and especially to show the reality of the people diagnosed, and in our case of children, which are usually invisible to society.

The syndrome does not manifest in the same way in all people, hence its difficulty in diagnosis, as it is a severe developmental disorder characterized by a deficit in three main areas: social interaction; language and communication and cognitive inflexibility. It is a little known disorder, so it is important to give visibility to better understand the child and people with Asperger Syndrome, and thus facilitate your daily life.

Characteristics of children with Asperger

By influencing aspects related to social interaction and the expression of affectivity, it makes the day-to-day life of children with Asperger complicated, since their adaptation to the environment and many times their behavior is affected. They feel weird, different and misunderstood.

Their appearance is normal, their intelligence also (may even be higher than average), as well as speech development, but they suffer problems in their brain development that makes them present difficulties in situations of daily life. They find it difficult to initiate and maintain friendships, as well as identify their emotions and those of others, tend to be isolated because they do not feel the need to share interests, enjoyments and goals with other people.

In turn, they have difficulties in having a conversation and may present with Sensory Processing Disorders, usually auditory and visual, which can lead to additional complications in their adaptation to the environment.

It is very important to detect the syndrome in time to be able to help that diagnosed child to make his or her life more bearable, avoiding unnecessary frustrations. Similarly, society should not see them as rare or antisociable people, but understand the disorder to get a real integration of those little ones.
