Little gardeners: we set up a garden at home and the children will be responsible

Summer time can be the most nutritious if we let our children get involved with the family feeding by starting a small garden at home.

There are many options, today we collect a few to serve as inspiration for little gardeners that we have at home and that can be in charge of planting and taking care of gazpacho tomatoes, salad cucumbers or zucchini for ratatouille.

We are going to set up a garden at home to be responsible What we eat this summer (at least something we eat, we must not abuse).

No, not much space is needed a small garden or even a terrace of more or less normal size can be a perfect setting so that our children take responsibility for a different and fun task: set up and take care of a small urban garden.

Of course our help will be necessary as well as our guardianship, at least at the beginning, then we will see how they develop and even we and they will learn on the fly.

First steps

The site is the fundamental thing obviously. Once we have located the space that we are going to allocate to our new hobby, we will have to condition it as it deserves.

When space is the problem, the solution comes in the form of vertical orchard or garden tables and possibilities linked to creativity and recycling there are thousands of them.

In the networks there are photos to take ideas that are sure to adapt to the space in which you want to install your garden, go stocking PET bottles because many of these ideas focus on the possibilities of these bottles as containers, such as “sherds” for the next plants that form your garden.

If you are not handyman, in shops you also find this possibility of vertical orchard that occupies little space, attached to the side of the terrace or the garden and can give a lot of play to our little gardeners.

If you have some more space, perhaps the most comfortable is the garden in that kind of table with a bottom in which you can organize the tools underneath and also your back will not resent having to be crouched too long. Surely you have seen them in the nurseries if you have ever gone to buy any plant, you can buy and install them at home but always first, measure the space you have so you don't have unpleasant surprises.

What we plant

Well, that will be conditioned as is logical by the tastes of the family and the type of garden for which we are opted for depending on the space we have.

Tomatoes are always the most grateful but we have to have foresight to tie them to some kind of guide when they grow up, children are also very excited to pick their own peppers although many later do not want to eat them.

The guaranteed success you have with strawberries and herbs, lavender or peppermint grow without great care, basil is ideal to add to salads or pasta and rosemary will serve to aromatize some roast.

Self-management

It may sound complicated but since we put ourselves on, why not also worry about the earth, the compost on which we are going to plant our vegetables?

Given that it is an activity in which children are going to be more involved, wouldn't it be good if the issue of organic waste generated at home could be managed by them for their own garden?

Obviously not all garbage, only that generated from vegetables or for example the eggshells that are consumed. There are containers to be able to pick it up as we produce it, but we can also make our own homemade composter in the garden or on the terrace.

Yes, the issue of space is going to be crucial when it comes to getting involved with this or having to let it go but as an instructional for children to understand how some garbage is managed, to really recycle, to learn the processes Chemicals that are produced in the compost, is most appropriate.

You see that they can take responsibility for a living being and it does not necessarily have to be an animal, if they take good care of the small garden and are rewarded with a good harvest, they will not only have entertained themselves but will have learned perhaps more than they themselves imagine.
