Some parents want to call their baby 'Wolf', but they prevent it

For tastes, the colors. If something comes true this saying is in the choice of the baby's name. There are names for all tastes, and of course there are some very extravagant and others of very doubtful taste. We recently commented on the latest fashion to give babies Pokémon names, and so there are many names that may never have crossed your mind.

What would you do if they didn't let you give your baby the name you chose? Some parents of Madrid they decided to call their baby 'Wolf', but they prevent it. If they do not propose an alternative name, he will impose the baby's name. With cases like this, the debate about whether parents have the right to choose the name they want for their child is reopened, whatever this is, where is the limit? Who decides?

Why 'wolf'?

They decided to call it that because "we are lovers of this animal," said Ignacio and Maria, the parents of the child, who after his birth approached the civil registry of Fuenlabrada to register his son they were denied do it with that name, because it could be offensive for the child's development. Just as Paloma, León or Delfín are names of animals accepted for humans, "what is the difference with wolf?", Parents wonder.

Lobo is the contemporary Hispanicization of the Italian 'Lupo', means Lobo, that is strength, cunning and intelligence.

What does the law say

Art 54 of the Civil Registry Law and Art. 192 of the Civil Registry Regulations determine the limits to the freedom of choice of name.

"Names that objectively harm the person are prohibited."

In addition, it indicates that the Resolution of the General Directorate of Registries and Notaries of October 18, 2005 have already ruled on the imposition of the proper name 'Lobo'. In its Foundation III remember that

"Names that make identification confusing are prohibited and this prohibition certainly reaches the proposed name, which corresponds to a special last name."

Although in the first place they were told that they did not accept that name because it could be offensive to the child, subsequently the reason they were given is that being a Wolf a surname in Spain can not accept it as a proper name, something that parents do not understand since "there are many surnames in this country that match their own names" such as 'Leon'.

They have initiated a petition on Change.org to be allowed to register their child as 'Wolf', as planned during pregnancy. So they started calling him when he was inside his mother's womb and also after birth.

They ask that the current legislation be changed and that "if someone must decide to what extent a name can mark the life of a person, it is not a mere official or a judge, but a team of psychologists or pedagogues specialized in the matter."

UPGRADE (08/03/2016): The general director of the Registries and Notaries, Javier Gómez Gálligo, has announced that Lobo will be admitted as a name in the registry as requested by his parents.
