Mom after childbirth

Your baby is already born, it is in your arms. It is the best moment of your life. Previously the neonatologist found that everything was fine, and what about mom after childbirth?.

After delivery, the mother usually spends about two hours in a recovery room, but if she is a C-section, she stays 6 to 24 hours in a resuscitation room. Both rooms are next to the delivery room.

The first two hours are the most critical, since there is a greater danger of bleeding. The evolution of the mother is controlled by the nursing staff, who usually regularly monitors their constants, such as pulse, blood pressure, temperature ... and is regularly visited by the gynecologist.

Before entering the future mother in the delivery room, she is usually given a route that will be used to administer antibiotics if necessary and put oxytocin, which will accelerate dilation. This route will also be used to hydrate it with serum during labor, whenever necessary, in case of caesarean section. The epidural catheter, placed on the back during delivery, is usually left on until the anesthesiologist indicates to remove it. As for the catheter, a usual practice in caesarean sections, it is left for a few hours controlling the woman's urination. It is also left if the parturient has not urinated for more than 7 hours, thus they manage to empty her bladder and favor the contraction of the uterus.

The points of the episotomy usually evolve without problems. The points of the caesarean section are usually covered with a dressing for a whole day. If this dressing is not stained it is a sign that everything is going well.

After childbirth, the belly is still very bulky, and that they lose between 5 and 7 kilos. This will return to its usual size when the uterus returns to its initial state. A nurse assesses if the uterus is at the level of the navel, this means that it contracts properly.

There are remains of maternal blood and tissues that remain inside the uterus, which are released through vaginal bleeding. During the first days it may contain thick clots, we always have a follow-up of the nurse so that this happens properly.

It is tried that the mother has an early mobility, that is to say, that she is as little as possible in the bed, since in this way vascular problems are avoided and the uterine involution improves.

If a mother is sore from stitches, she is usually given painkillers compatible with breastfeeding. As for the food, in case of caesarean section, the mother remains fasting for a while, since the abdominal organs have been manipulated, a rest of the digestive system is necessary. If the birth is vaginal, the mother can already eat as soon as she returns to her room.

The parturient women can take a shower within a few hours of giving birth, as long as they feel strong, recover their mobility and do not bleed much.

Doctors advise that breastfeeding begin in the same delivery room, in the first encounter between mother and child. This is the best time for both. Once in the room, the nurse examines the mother's chest and helps her with the most comfortable posture to breastfeed the baby.

If you have an uncomplicated birth, mother and child leave the center two days after delivery. In case of caesarean section, the stay will be 4 or 5 days.
