Home delivery: giving birth at home

It is a fairly widespread practice in Europe, which in Spain is gaining more and more followers.

Women increasingly prioritize the comfort and privacy of give birth in their own homes as Patricia Camacho has done a few weeks ago in a cave in Granada.

This first-time mother is a physiotherapist and it was clear that she did not want to give birth to her son "in a hostile environment such as a hospital."

He had a very slow delivery, day and a half dilation. There was no anesthesia, no oxytocin or episiotomy. Everything has been very natural, painless and unhurried. He had the assistance of a midwife at his side all the time and a car at the door in case any complications arose.

Patricia's case makes us think that giving birth in our own home is not a wild alternative, but a possibility of bringing a child into the world in a more natural, intimate and, of course, comfortable way.

In Spain we are still very far from countries like Holland and England, where home births are an option within the social security system, that is, they are subsidized.

If we wish to do so, we must pay between 1,000 and 1,800 euros in particular for having the assistance of a professional at home. There are private organizations that are dedicated to attending home deliveries with all the guarantees.

Home birth is a trend that increasingly engages women. As a disadvantage, the insecurity of not having immediate hospital care for possible problems that could endanger the life of the mother or the baby.

As an advantage, feeling calm and relaxed while being in a family environment facilitates the process of childbirth.

The most positive, that we have more and more alternatives to choose where and how we want to give birth.

Would you consider giving birth in your own home?
