Twice the risks in caesarean sections by choice

Caesarean section is a widely discussed practice. Theoretically, it should be practiced only in the case of a medical decision in the face of the infeasibility of a vaginal birth, but it is known that this is not always the case.

We have already spoken in the blog about the abuse of cesarean deliveries in Spain and Latin America, with a rate well above 10-15%, a percentage considered as moderated by WHO.

Already the cesarean section involves greater risks than those of a normal birth for both the mother and the baby, so it is unconscious to take it as an arbitrary choice of the mother for fear of the pain of childbirth or for any other type of convenience.

A British study published in the British Medical Journal based on almost 100,000 births in Latin America showed that in cases of caesarean sections that are not performed by emergency but by mother's choice the risk of dying of the mother is doubled and of developing serious complications such as hysterectomies, blood transfusions or admission to intensive therapy.

They also increase the chances of the baby entering intensive care, in addition to the risk of death 70% higher than a cesarean section compared to vaginal delivery.

This does not mean that caesarean sections are bad, on the contrary they are the best option in certain situations, since in fact they save the lives of many babies, but they should only be performed when natural birth cannot occur and by express medical decision.
