Eight keys to successful breastfeeding

We know that there is no better food for the baby than breast milk. Among its benefits we can mention that it is free, it is always prepared and at the ideal temperature, it provides immunity against diseases and decreases the risk of allergies, in addition to promoting the bond of attachment between the mother and the baby.

Because of its numerous advantages, it is important to extend breastfeeding as long as possible, at least exclusively during the first six months. There is some tips we can keep in mind to get a successful breastfeeding.

  • Put the baby to the breast right after birth: breastfeed the baby in the first hours of life, if possible within the first half hour. In addition to promoting the contraction of the uterus after delivery, it helps the milk to rise faster thanks to the stimulation made by the baby to suck.

  • Infinite patience: You're not an expert yet, especially if it's your first baby, but both will learn. Patience is, I believe, one of the fundamental pillars of successful breastfeeding. Do not give up before a failure. Any inconvenience can be overcome with a positive attitude and love.

  • Feed on demand: The watch is not compatible with successful breastfeeding. To give the tit on demand is to do it whenever the baby asks for it, without schedules, even at night. Little by little, the baby will establish its own feeding rhythm with regular intervals. The baby may be hungry at the time of finishing a shot or feel like receiving the mother's warmth from sleep, cold, discomfort, irritability. Remember that the tit is food, but also comfort.

  • Do not use pacifier the first weeks: the use of teats at least until breastfeeding has been established is discouraged. The suction of the nipple is different from the nipple suction and can confuse the baby.

  • Proper posture: If the baby is not properly placed on the breast, it is harder to get the milk at the risk of getting tired of trying. The key is to bring the baby as close as possible to the breast by placing him belly-up with the mother and making sure that most of the breast areola is inside the baby's mouth.

  • A favorable environment: Breastfeeding is a very intimate act of union between mother and baby. It is important that both are at ease, relaxed and in tune, away from annoying noises and distractions. If necessary, move with the baby to a quieter place with less light.

  • Respect the baby's rhythm: As you know, the composition of the milk is not the same at the beginning as at the end of the shot, so it is not convenient to remove the baby from the breast in the middle of the shot to change it. We must respect the rhythm of the baby, when he is satiated, he will stop drinking. Most likely, he falls asleep, especially during the first weeks.

  • That work is not an impediment: If you have to go back to work you can continue giving your milk "at a distance". You can extract the milk and store it (this video explains how) so that the baby is fed with the best during the shots that you can not give. It is a small effort, but it is worth it.
