Baby names: heroes of Greek mythology (II)

We already saw some names for babies inspired by the heroes of mythology, but there is more, and we will introduce them. Today we will look for possible names in the catalog of Argonauts.

Classical Greece is one of the sources of Western culture and for that reason many of the names of the most charismatic characters of mythology that collected the literary sources have become usual among us.

Jason It is one of them. Usually we hear it in the Anglophone version of the name but I personally prefer it with its accent on the o. Jason is an especially interesting hero, full of nuances, and that makes him fascinating.

It seems, even reading his fantastic adventures, a person who could be real. The great journey that he undertakes symbolizes the search for the marvelous above all difficulties and is, at the same time, a song of camaraderie and friendship.

Jason He was the son of the king of Yolcos. But his father had lost his life and the boy was removed from the throne by his uncle. He grew up, like so many heroes, in the care of the centaur Chiron, and when he wanted to return to his country to recover his inheritance, he was sent on a trip that his uncle and enemy predicted without return: the distant Cólquide, north of the known world, where time the magical Golden Fleece had been taken behind.

Jason embarked on his talking ship, the Argos, with the bravest and brightest youth of the Greece of his generation, which is approximately the one before the Trojan War.

Hercules (Heracles), Castor and Pollux, Orpheus, Meleagro, Palemón, Asclepius the doctor, the shocking Atalanta, Linceo, Theseus, Laertes, father of Odysseus (Ulysses), Peleo, the father of Achilles accompanied him. His adventures, on strange islands and against spooky monsters, are a source of admiration during later centuries.

Arrived at his destination, he won the trophy, which was a golden ram skin, thanks to an enigmatic, passionate and cruel woman, who falls in love with him and causes the ruin of his own family to favor him: the terrible Medea.

With him, I already mentioned, Heracles traveled, who we talked about in another subject, and his other companions can also inspire us if we look for an original name and with a beautiful story behind.

Castor and Pollux They are twin brothers or twins. Children of the King of Sparta officially, everything indicates that in reality, one or both were really entrusted by God Zeus. They and their two sisters (Helena and Clitemnestra) were born from eggs that their mother Leda laid, and that is that Zeus had become a swan when he slept with her. Things of myths, of course. Zeus used to take animal forms to seduce the women who called his attention. In this case, Leda welcomed the beautiful white swan and was fertilized.

Both brothers, who always remained very close, embark on the Argos. They also ran adventures without a story. They fought against those who dared to annoy their beautiful sisters and faced those thieves who seem to have been a plague at the time. When their time came, both were declared immortal and taken to heaven, where they are represented by the constellation of Gemini.

Orpheus He is, in addition to a tireless adventurer, the great musician of mythology. He was the son of the god Apollo and a muse, and therefore his talent for art is more powerful than any weapon. With his music he is able to defeat the guardian of the kingdom of the dead, the Cancerbero, a monstrous dog with three heads and enormous voracity, as well as all the other lords of Hades. His wife, Eurydice, had died, but he did not die to meet her, but beat the grim reaper to rescue her. However, impatience made him fail at the last moment.

He faced mermaids, who loved men with their songs to lead them to certain death. And to the Vellocino guardian, a dragon, some say it was the Orpheus melody that made him sleep.

Violence, given the beauty of music, is helpless. When Orpheus played, not only men, beasts, also prostrated themselves before him.

The great musician was shattered by the bacchantes, angry women who worshiped Dionysus, god of wine, with dances for the mountains and orgies. The music, to calm them, was not enough.

There are, as we have seen, unsuspected possibilities of Names loaded with loudness and legend in the Greek mythology. I will continue to look for the most beautiful so you can choose the one you like best for your baby.
