"Step by step": motto of the World Breastfeeding Week 2010

He motto in this year of World Breastfeeding Week is "Step by step towards a human attention of birth and lactation" It aims to promote good practices that are known to improve the possibility of achieving adequate breastfeeding for mothers who wish to breastfeed.

World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated every year and on each occasion the organizers propose a motto that, translated into different languages, brings together all the participants in the dissemination of a motto that reinforces the promotion of breastfeeding in society.

Last year they talked about the importance of breastfeeding for the survival of children in emergencies and catastrophes. This year the core of the message is the "10 steps to successful breastfeeding" which are the basis of the Friends of Children Hospitals Initiative, now known as the Initiative for the Humanization of Birth Assistance and Lactation.

During the last 20 years, more than 20,000 maternity hospitals, about 28% of all existing in the world, have implemented the "Ten Steps" and have been certified as Hospital Amigos del Niño y la Niña (IHAN). In this period, exclusive breastfeeding rates have increased.

But there is a stalemate and the reality is that many mothers who would like to breastfeed do not succeed or find difficulties that turn their breastfeeding into a complicated process.

The WABA, Word Alliance for Breastfeeding Action, organizer of the event, considers that the reduced programming of the IHAN (Children's Friends Hospital Initiative) in the world, inadequate training and the weak fulfillment of the Ten Steps in accredited maternity hospitals, contribute to stagnation and decline in exclusive breastfeeding rates.

The objectives of the World Breastfeeding Week 2010 they go through giving more importance to the "10 steps", revitalizing health systems, involving social agents who defend human rights in the promotion of breastfeeding and ensuring that maternal and child health personnel are adequately trained to advise and support Optimum infant feeding.

There is scientific evidence endorsed by the World Health Organization that demonstrates the real usefulness of the 10 steps to ensure that mothers can breastfeed.

The extensive document entitled "Scientific Evidence of the Ten Steps towards a Happy Natural Breastfeeding" which focuses on these scientifically proven demonstrations is accessible on the WHO website and is published in Spanish.

No doubt this campaign of the World Breastfeeding Week 2010 with the slogan "" Step by step towards a human attention of birth and lactation " It will be effective. It is the way in which breastfeeding can increase among mothers and for the benefit of women, children and society as a whole. Without judgments, without confrontations, but through truthful information and the application of real and effective measures in social groups and health facilities, which can and should do much more.
