More than half of Madrid hospitals separate babies from their mothers

The Association El Parto es Nuestro has published a Report on the accessibility of fathers and mothers to the neonatal units in the hospitals of the Community of Madrid and the fulfillment of the rights of the admitted babies. The conclusion of the work is clear: More than half of Madrid hospitals prevent babies from being with their mothers and fathers.

The result of the investigation is quite disappointing and reveals that in more than half of Madrid hospital centers babies are still being prevented from being with their mothers. The complete document can be found on the page of the Association El Parto es Nuestro.

The data that has handled the El Parto is Our Association for the realization of this report they are based on those offered by the hospitals themselves and important aspects have been analyzed such as the hours of access to the neonatal units, the restrictions on breastfeeding schedules and the application of the kangaroo method.

Newborns, as revealed by scientific evidence and the recommendations of national and international organizations, should remain 24 hours with their mother and only in very specific and serious cases can a separation or restriction of contact be justified. In addition, it is also known that the feeding of babies, whether artificial or natural, must be on demand and that, even premature babies, benefit from the practice of the kangaroo method.

These recommendations are valid and applicable to the vast majority of cases, both in newborns and in infants who must remain admitted.

However, the outdated organization of many hospitals makes it impossible, limiting babies' contact with their parents without real medical reasons, which, without a doubt, causes harm and implies a breach of patients' rights.

This excellent UCIS Report of the CCAA of Madrid published by the Association El Parto es Nuestro reveals that only 41%, less than half of Madrid's hospitals favor the natural and recommended contact of babies with their parents, and also offers solutions and recommendations completely consistent with scientific evidence so that hospitals improve, by applying them, their attention to babies and their families.
