How to care for ours during a heat wave?

As you know, the State Meteorological Agency announced last day eight, a progressive and widespread rise in temperatures that continues today, although it is expected that as of tomorrow Saturday, temperatures will begin to fall.

The maximums will reach or exceed 40º in numerous points of the southern half, central zone and Ebro valley, and in most of the rest of the Peninsula and Balearic Islands the 35th will be exceeded. Today it is possible that in the Guadalquivir valley they will see how the thermometers reach 44 degrees, which is not a little. For all this it is necessary to take precautionary measures, even in the Canary Islands that will be around 35/37 degrees.

With this goal I want approach the recommendations of the Red Cross to face this 'heat wave'. Health problems associated with high temperatures they can be avoided with very simple measures that must be taken outside, inside the home, in the car; and even during meals.

What can we do abroad?

It's very important stay in the shade and avoid activities away from home in the central hours of the day (especially if they are intense). When it is necessary to leave during the hottest hours, we must remember to rest, protect ourselves from the sun and refresh ourselves (drink liquids, cool our heads, use fans).

And inside the house?

The most accurate measure, especially considering children, is stay in cooler rooms, and lower blinds / awnings, as well as pass the curtains, to prevent the sun from entering through them. Keep in mind the orientation of your house to cover the windows at the right time, reopening them when the sun sets elsewhere.

To the extent possible, ignition during the day of appliances that may increase temperatures: oven, hob, bakery, sandwich makers, etc. will be avoided. If you use fans, leave a window open (with the blind down) because they do not cool the air but only help in its circulation

Precautions inside the car

We will never leave children, the elderly, the sick or pets inside a car, and whenever it is hot we will open the windows or put on the air conditioner, ensuring that the temperature change is progressive. We will also ensure that the occupants of the vehicle have fans.

On long journeys (and this must be 100% respected when it is very hot) we will rest every two hours, and we will hydrate continuously, this assuming it is necessary to travel when an alert is declared due to high temperatures.

Care at mealtime.

Eat fresh and natural foods giving preference to meals prepared with raw fruits and vegetables. Drink lots of water and natural juices, avoiding drinks with stimulants (coffee, tea), as well as alcoholic drinks. This will prevent the loss of liquids and mineral salts.

These are other details to consider with children, adults and the elderly: wear baggy clothes, light and light colors. Use visor caps that also cover the neck, temples and ears. We will wear comfortable and breathable footwear.

Finally remind you that sick people should also take special care: They will not self medicate, although they can consult the doctor if they need any special and personalized measures.

In any case, if we feel bad when it is very hot, or we observe any symptoms in the children that indicate it to us, it is essential to stop the activity, rest in a cool place, and ask for help.
