Christmas cookies to make with children (II): decorating cookies with fondant

The other day I explained the first step of how to make Christmas cookies with children, specifically I explained how to make the cookie dough and its recipe.

Cookies can be decorated in two basic ways, or decorate cookies with fondant or real icing (also known as royal icing), today I will teach you how to decorate cookies with children using fondant.

For those who do not know, fondant is a paste with a texture very similar to plasticine, made of icing sugar, jelly, water, glucose, butter and essence or aroma.

I am not going to explain to you how to prepare it because it is not worth doing at home (it is my opinion), if you dedicate yourself to pastries it is something else but to decorate cookies at home, it is best that you buy it already made. Each time it can be found in more places and pastry shops. Anyway, if you do not want to complicate, I advise you to do as I do and buy it online. They usually send it in a few days, you can choose the colors and you can compare prices with all the online pastry shops you find.

The taste changes from one brand to another but it is basically sweet, very very sweet. It is not the most appropriate for a children's diet but we are decorating Christmas cookies and that is done only once a year, isn't it?

Let's go for the technique, in my opinion, the easiest to use with children: how to decorate cookies with fondant.

Ingredients to decorate 20 cookies (normal size) with fondant

  • White Fondant (or already colored - sold in packages of 250 g)
  • Gel coloring (if you buy white fondant)
  • Christmas shaped butter cookies
  • Icing sugar (to sprinkle)
  • Butter
  • Water

Material needed to decorate cookies with fondant

  • Roller
  • Cookie cutters (the same ones that we used to cut our Christmas cookies)
  • Chopsticks
  • Small brush
  • Spatula
  • Sugar sprinkler
  • Slats to measure the thickness of the fondant

How to decorate cookies with fondant

  1. Dye the fondant: in the photos below you see how to color the fondant step by step with the help of a toothpick and putting very little coloring.

  2. We stretch the dough with the help of the roller (we can use the wooden guides, the ones in the photo are ones that have 3 mm wood, they also sell some rubber bands to put on the roller of different sizes).

  3. We cut the fondant with the shapes we want (with cutters or a knife).

  4. With the help of a spatula, we lift them and apply a little water or edible glue on the base with the help of a brush.

  5. We hook them to the cookie (water makes glue). We can hook fondant on fondant (we must be careful that it is not very thick because otherwise we will have a giant cookie and a little inedible, the fondant is ultra sweet and too fat can ruin the cookie).

  6. We let them dry a couple of hours and keep them wrapped in paper napkins and airtight containers or cans. Above all, do not store them in the fridge because the fondant is moistened and damaged.
