Living gluten free: National Celiac Day

Today, May 27 is celebrated in Spain on National Celiac Day. There are many children diagnosed with the Celiac Disease, characterized by permanent gluten intolerance, protein present in wheat, barley, rye (CBT) and probably oats.

If you are not a child or close relative, almost everyone has a known celiac and, although little by little things are improving for this group, there is still a long way to go to improve the quality of life of people who have learned to live gluten free.

It is believed that half a million people could suffer from celiac disease in Spain, but it is an underdiagnosed condition of which only 50,000 confirmed cases are known.

There are several associations that fight for changes of all kinds such as an improvement in diagnosis, better product labeling, greater monitoring and control of gluten-free products, and greater awareness of companies.

This year's motto is "We are all one. One is all ”, with which it is intended to create awareness of the need for us to be all united in the face of the problem.

Currently, the age of diagnosis is 3 years, but with the implementation of the early diagnosis protocol is intended to reduce. Celiac disease is the most frequent chronic bowel disease in Spain and the only treatment known is to have a gluten-free diet throughout life. Although there is no known effective way to prevent it, recent research suggests that breastfeeding with small gluten intakes could prevent celiac disease

We know more and more cases and although it seems that the world is falling apart when a child is diagnosed with the disease, you have to reinvent yourself and completely change your eating habits.

We hope that progress will continue so that these children can have a better quality of life in the coming years. In case it serves the parents of celiac children, Direct to the Palate usually offer delicious gluten-free recipes for celiacs.
