The millennial generation begins to access the labor market and its qualities are not valued

This Christmas I am taking the opportunity to review the television series House of Cards, that although in Vaya Tele they have considered a disappointment to me it is very entertaining and with very attractive characters that seem very evil and perverse. In one of the dialogues of the series there is a moment in which one of the protagonists tells a very young journalist, who works as a reporter specializing in politics and who sports a tremendous ambition, which Who wants a job that lasts more than two years?. And I loved the phrase because it seems to me that they are going to have to take on millennials in its performance while we adapt to new ways of working and generating wealth in the world.

I have read, although I have not been able to confirm the source, that companies are having special difficulties to work with the millennials, what do I remember those born? during the 80s and 90s of the last century and that they are already accessing the labor market. And it is that 50% of business leaders say that this generation lacks the necessary professional skills, even for initial level positions, that have low level ethical criteria and that require excessive flexibility of the job. I mean, a generational shock full-fledged with qualified millennials, by Time magazine in May 2013 as what is seen on the cover: "the generation of the self, lazy, narcissistic and living with their parents."

I think not everything has to be black and white so returning millennials probably change jobs many times throughout their working life, the truth is that they have skills developed during the Internet era and that, although not everyone has them all, I think they have to be highly valued at the moment of great uncertainty and uncertainty. Many of these skills and abilities that these young people have we have commented on and emphasized in Peques and Más:

  • They are dynamic and generate new knowledge and ways of doing. They are especially motivated people who can contribute talent and knowledge
  • They are very active and are constantly testing new techniques and informing themselves
  • They do not fear failure and do not mind making mistakes because they know that mistakes find the best option to continue learning
  • They are creative and use imagination to contribute new ideas
  • They encourage collaboration. They prefer to work in agile teams, are not used to handle fixed and hierarchical structures and are willing to always give their opinion
  • They are used to solving problems. They leverage their capacity for collaboration and support the team. In addition, if they have to organize or be members of the team they assume the role normally
  • They are people who learn fast and also unlearn. They are able to handle mountains of information by learning to filter instead of searching and constantly train to adapt
  • They handle new technologies, work daily with them and are aware of any developments that may arise and that they can apply in their day to day. They know that to stand out they have to take risks and try new techniques to avoid being left behind

Perhaps in the United States, the country where the series was filmed in 2013 will be more advanced although in Spain we are laying foundations that will eventually be seen as good initiatives. I like very much Wayra, which we met by Touch of Classic although we also have Shuttle, from Mercadona, or the initiatives of The Caixa for young. Although there are many more and of course initiatives like Initiator Kids that prepare the student from childhood.

In any case, we will have to see how young millennials evolve in their jobs because the challenge is for everyone. Both will have to adapt and evolve in the face of the new challenges facing Western society.
