A nine-year-old boy falls to the subway tracks while playing distracted with his cell phone

Screen addiction among children and adolescents is a fact. It causes problems of family life, lack of sleep, damages eyesight, lowers school performance ... But it is also literally a risk to physical integrity.

This is demonstrated by the images that come to us from Russia. The subway cameras in the city of Yekaterinburg captured how a child walks towards the edge of the platform, while looking at the mobile screen. A few seconds later it rushes to the road. Fortunately it was not damaged, although it is an important warning for parents around the world.

Mobile phones are not for young children

Who has not seen any young (and not so young) absorbed in their mobile device while crossing a street or walking, bumping into an obstacle?

In Babies and more “screen time” is more than setting limits

But even if we are used to it, that does not mean that it is well, much less. I remember about three years ago, when the Pokemon Go game became fashionable and we collided with a multitude of people all over the world walking like zombies, looking only at their cell phone hunting for the valuable dolls.

Although it is no longer a trend, it still has many fans, according to our Xataka teammates. And one of them seems to be Lev, the child of the images, as Russian media explains.

As you can see in the images, captured by one of the cameras of the subway, he was so distracted looking at his cell phone, that he did not realize that he was going to the road. Luckily, no train was approaching when it fell. He quickly got up and started running down the road until a worker noticed and helped him up the platform, since the structure was too high for him to leave alone.

Although everything was in great fright, the images make us rethink the use of electronic devices among the little ones. If experts have a habit of not buying their first mobile before age 12, why do they already have one at age nine? Should we set standards for good use? And in case they have a mobile "to have them located and be able to communicate with them" (the perfect excuse of parents), what applications or games should you have?

These are questions that as parents we should ask ourselves to avoid accidents that are totally avoidable and as serious as Lev's.
