54.1 percent of Spanish Internet users do not use passwords to protect equipment and documents

The National Observatory for Telecommunications and the Information Society Network has conducted 3000 surveys of Spanish users, and analyzed more than 2000 computers to carry out the “Study on Cybersecurity and Trust in Spanish homes”.

As a novelty, links to contents of the Office of Internet Security are offered, so that we can consult cybersecurity advice and measures in the different areas in which the study focuses; such as free protection tools.

According to the study in which INTECO has also collaborated, 59.8% of computers in Spanish homes are infected. On the other hand, 54.1 percent of Spanish Internet users do not use passwords to protect equipment and documents

The study focuses on the following areas: home equipment such as antivirus and firewall; WIFI wireless networks, mobile devices, online banking, e-commerce, Social Networks, etc.

Main conclusions of the study

  • The main security measures used in a "real" way the respondents are antivirus programs (81.2%) and firewalls (77.1%). The data “declared” by the respondents, gives a similar value in terms of the use of antivirus programs (83.9%), however it gives a lower value in the case of the use of firewalls (44.2%).

  • 37.9% of users choose to modify the security program settings if necessary to improve the Internet browsing and use experience.

  • 38.8% of e-commerce users use prepaid cards or wallets to make payments over the Internet.

  • Increase the percentage of teams that have had infection, the real data reveals that 59.8% of the computers are infected while the data declared or perceived by Internet users is 25.9%.

  • 53.7% of users have suffered some fraud situation; for example, 59.8% of these have been invited to visit some suspicious web page, 53.3% received an email offering an unwanted service or 43.9% received a false or suspicious job offer.

The research has been carried out from a methodology based on the dedicated online panel and composed of those homes with Internet connection (Users were over 15 years old and connected to the Internet from home at least once a month) spread throughout the national territory.
