With the September equinox, autumn 2014 begins

Has already started fall 2014 with the September equinox or autumn equinox, at least in the northern hemisphere of the Earth because in the south it is the spring equinox. It is the equinox because in the 24 hours of the earth's rotation, day and night have almost the same duration on the entire planet Earth. I remember that for the northern hemisphere we approach winter and for the south, summer.

This phenomenon can be seen in the video from below in which both day and night last practically the same. The video was obtained on Russian weather satellite Elektro-L during the September equinox of last 2013. The Elektro-L satellite is in geostationary orbit on a point in the equator of the Earth, in the area of the Indian Ocean and always points towards our planet. In the video, four seconds long, you can see how the sun's time in all areas of the Earth is equal to the night time, about two seconds in the video. Of course in the areas where the sun hits and while you can see the real images, there are moving clouds and many visible areas in Africa, Asia and Oceania. Now we wait for Earth's next equinox that will be in March 2015 and that in the northern hemisphere will set us heading for summer.

In addition to the APOD of the POT, the information of equinox appears in Microsiervos and indicate that soon, on October 26 we will have to move the clock again and delay it to adapt to the shortest days to come.

And finally, something that my friend Eduardo taught me when we were studying at the EGB and that I still have not forgotten. And it is that in the northern hemisphere winter has nothing to do with the distance from the Earth to the Sun, because although in winter it is when the Earth is closer to the Sun, it is the angle formed by the sun's rays with the Earth those who decide the temperature increase. The sun's rays fall vertically in summer and very oblique in winter.

In future articles we will discuss what needs to be done with the time change and how it impacts our habits and those of the kids. For now, enjoy because autumn is one of the most beautiful seasons of the year for its colors, their aromas and the desire to stay at home to live good moments with the family while the cold is approaching.
