Can you donate blood while breastfeeding?

Blood donation is a simple and altruistic act of great value to our society. Blood is essential for the lives of many patients since without her they would not survive nor could surgical interventions be carried out.

Many people are very aware of this issue and many mothers do it regularly and wish to continue doing so once they have had their babies.

The problem originates when a mother who is breastfeeding wants to donate blood. Normally they are rejected for being nursing mothers adducing a norm that, so far, No one has been able to back up with scientific data. Royal Decree 1854/1993 with ORDER of 1996 determined that "After pregnancy, the quarantine period should last as many months as the pregnancy has lasted, or at least for the entire duration of breastfeeding."

However, Royal Decree 1088/2005, of September 16, which repeals the previous one says that in case of pregnancy there is a "exclusion of six months after delivery or termination of pregnancy, except in exceptional circumstances and at the discretion of the doctor". Unspecified Nothing related to breastfeeding.

The Red Cross Transfusion Center, on the other hand, says this about pregnancy: "No, during pregnancy and then you must wait six months from birth, or from the end of breastfeeding if there is one.".

In conclusion, a mother yes you can donate blood even if you are breastfeeding after 6 months of giving birth (provided there is no other contraindication).
